Google of the future now - Knowledge Graph is here

Google's search engine of the future is here - the semantic web - or Knowledge Graph as Google likes to call it.

The idea is that Google starts to see search queries not as standalone words but 'understand' them as each word relates to the other. This type of interpretation means that Google doesn't see 'strings' anymore but 'entities' - nodes and relationships. For example, in the case of 'Costa Rica', Google understands that it is a country in Central America with two other countries and two oceans surrounding it and that it belongs to Latin America and many other attributes.

Google's Knowledge Graph is the new semantic search of the future. This graphic shows how entities are associated.

Currently Google reports that their Knowledge Graph has more than 500 million people, places and things and that the things have more than 3.5 billion attributes associated to them.

Users will see results from Knowledge Graph as often as they see Google Maps results.

This is a huge change and will impact all search results from here on in.

Microdata Schema.org helps Search Engines understand your site better

schema.org and microdata SEO
Search engines such as Google have greatly improved the quality of the results they show. However, despite what may seem like 'intuitive' results the search engines really do not 'understand' what they are processing.

A new way to structure information has been developed by Bing, Google and others in order to address this issue. The effort is called schema.org and it is a way to label information with metadata in order to clarify what each item of text is about. If you are posting a recipe you can mark it up with labels that say, for example, that it's a recipe, that it takes 20 minutes to cook, that it has a certain number of reviews and a photo to illustrate. This information is now understood by the search engine and it will show up in search results. See the image below for an example of schema.org metatagging results:

Organic placements vs Pay per Click - ppc brings 50% more visitors!

Pay per click ads bring 50% more traffic than organic alone
Several studies by Google have shown the relationship between organic rankings and pay per click. Mainly that if you cut your Pay per click campaign you would receive about 89% less visitors.

Some may think that because you are ranked #1 under a search term that that means that you do not have to advertise in pay per click.

However, the results of these studies show that adding pay per click ads can increase your clickthroughs by 50%.

This may be counter-intuitive but it turns out that the paid ad comes out 89% more times than the organic listing. So although, yes, you do come out #1 you come out in many less opportunities to be seen.

Of course, this may seem self-serving since Google mainly makes it's money from the pay per click ads but the data speaks for itself. We encourage you to do your own measurements.

This graphic maps out the information:

Top 10 Things NOT to do in SEO

SEO tactics to avoid in your internet marketing
Yes, since amerisol first began we have warned our esteemed customers of SEO shops that cut corners and try to outsmart the search engines in order to get rankings. The companies that apply these incorrect tactics have come to be known as 'black-hat SEOs'. Doing this can get your positioning lowered and even worse, your site can get completely banned. amerisol has never applied these tactics, of course, we are what is known as a white-hat SEO. We believe in applying what search engines recommend and quality content and links and that has garnered our customers positioning and traffic growth year after year.

Also, remember to apply common sense - if advertising for an SEO says they guarantee top 10 placement in search engines then you know something is not right and you should avoid them. Noone can guarantee that.

This info graphic is better for Halloween but anytime of the year is valid to make sure you are on the right track with your website:

Facebook Timeline for Companies - How does it affect you?

Facebook Timeline for companies
Facebook's Timeline - a new way to display one's information chronologically has been active for awhile for personal profiles. Now, Facebook has announced that it will convert all company pages to Timeline also by March 30th.

You can change over to Timeline right now but we do not recommend it since there are some bugs reported. In particular some users report that the transport to the page indicated when someone presses the Like button is not working.

So, this gives you time to create a great selling design with high conversion. The Cover Photos can be large which is very useful. Also, the template has a new width of 810 pixels for the tabs so that must be updated also.

So, how does this change to Timeline affect your company?

Changes to Default Tabs
When you pass over to Timeline Facebook won't allow you to set the default landing page when visitors come to your company page for the first time. Facebook Timeline will be the default page. Only 10% of Page traffic comes from this "like-getting" so it won't have such a great impact.  The majority of traffic comes from your postings and offers via email and likes on your webpages. You can still continue to Like-Gate your offers and exclusive content, however, so you can turn visitors into fans.

You will also be able to have large icons linking to your custom tabs giving them more conversion power. In addition you can "pin" a post to the top of your timeline in order to give it priority.

Here's a very complete video from Facebook Pages about Timeline for Companies
