Google's Penguin to get big Update

Google's Matt Cutts - in charge of being the face for everything search at the giant - said at the current SMX that a new Penguin is being released this year - a huge release.

Penguin is an algorithm created to increase the quality in search results. It is mainly geared at link farms - sites that sell links - that proliferated in the last few years and other sources of low-quality and spammy traffic.

The last release of Penguin was on October 2012 and many companies that had bought these links were penalized by losing rank and some were even barred from coming out in Google results completely.

Matt talks about Penguin here in this video:

Chart - Conversion rates per source

A recent study shows conversion and visitation rate per source. In general, web, paid search and email marketing perform well and should be in every company's internet tactics. Social media is the relative newcomer and, of course, the leader of the pack is Facebook although Twitter is also an important player. As most of our customers have told us conversion in general is low although they consider it important to their branding and marketing efforts especially because of engagement with their customers. Paid advertising on social media is even newer. As we've reported before Facebook has been trying to monetize their site so these numbers may change over time.
